An “important” community pub, owned by Greene King and operated under its Pub Partners model, has closed until further notice following a fire.

The BBC reported crews were called to the King’s Head in Sudbury, Suffolk, at around 7pm on Thursday 6 March following reports of smoke in the bar area and roof.

No casualties were reported and the incident was thought to have been brought to a conclusion by around 8.30am on Friday 7 March.

The fire service said six appliances were sent to tackle the blaze and that a full investigation was expected to take place, according to the BBC report.

Swift response

Suffolk Police were also in attendance at the scene to assist with road closures.

Following the incident, the pub confirmed it would remain closed until further notice.

A post on the pub’s Facebook page dated 6 March said: “Following a fire this evening, the Kings Head public house will be closed until further notice. We’re relieved to report that no one was injured.

“A huge thank you to Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service for their swift response and hard work.

“We appreciate your support and will provide updates as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding.”

According to the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) website, the Bures Road pub is thought to date back to 1880, with parts of the building potentially dating as far back as the 16th century.

Extremely grateful

The King’s Head is a Greene King Pub Partners site. Greene King said it owns the building but stated the business is operated independently.

A spokesperson for Greene King Pub Partners said: “We are extremely grateful for the swift actions of our partners at the King’s Head and the emergency services after a fire broke out at the pub last week. The most important thing is that no one was injured.

“We need to fully assess the damage to the building and expect the pub to remain closed for the time being.

“The King’s Head is an important part of the community and we appreciate people’s support and understanding. We will update on when our partner expects to welcome customers back into the pub when the time is right.”
