St Austell Brewery was crowned the Best Brewing Pub Company at the 2025 Publican Awards.

The Cornwall-based brewer and pub operator impressed judges with its recent innovations and the evolution of its traditional model to fit the modern market.

It was noted as a well-rounded business with high standards, a strong dedication to quality and a focus on environmental issues at a large scale.

While the firm honours its heritage, it is also forward-thinking, focusing on consumer outreach, supporting operators and new product development.

Family-owned

The historic brewery is based in St Austell, with a further brewing site in Bath. It operates a portfolio of pubs, inns, and hotels across Cornwall, Devon, and beyond, with an estate of more than 180 sites, and acquired Bath Ales in 2016.

Founded in 1851 by Walter Hicks, the company, which is still family-owned, is currently managed by CEO Kevin Georgel, with brewing director Georgina Young heading up the brewery side of the business.

The company’s core range includes Tribute Pale Ale (4.2%), Proper Job (4.5%), Korev Lager (4.8%) and Hicks Cornish Ale (5%).

St Austell also brews Mena Dhu Stout (4.5%), Anthem British Pale Ale (3.8%) and Cornish Best (3.4%) and recently expanded its portfolio to include Proper Job 0.5%.

The business conducts regular audits to check the quality of its products, and each pub has a dedicated master cellarman. Its cask sales are also up year-on-year in its managed sites, despite overall decline in the market.

Warm and welcoming

Each site tailors its offer depending on the needs of the community, as indicated by operators, and offer a warm and welcoming vibe in a cosy setting.

Speaking to The Morning Advertiser on entry to the event, Young, said her and colleagues were excited to be a finalist in three categories.

She added: “I’m looking forward to scooping some awards hopefully... and to see so many colleagues from the industry

“These awards are hugely important to us as a company and the whole industry. We really need this.” See the full video here.
