Mitchells & Butlers (M&B) has set itself ambitious targets to reduce its environmental impact and is making great strides on achieving them.

As part of its target to be net zero by 2040, the business aims to lower its scope one, two and three emissions through reducing its consumption of energy alongside purchasing 100% renewable electricity alongside continuing its solar panel roll out.

Furthermore, M&B is on a mission to convert kitchens from gas to electricity and entirely removing gas from sites.

This has meant the company has had to hone in on behavioural change and as part of this, has implemented sustainability ambassadors from within the business who support greater on-site waste segregation as part of their work.

Food emissions

Another area of focus for the business is food. It has moved to product-specific emissions information for more than half of its food-related emissions, meaning it can hold suppliers to account on what they’ve said they will reduce.

One example of this was low-emission dishes on menus from All Bar One are highlighted with a green leaf symbol, resulting in a reduction in emissions from this menu of more than a quarter (26%).

Waste reduction is another key part of M&B’s strategy, looking to reach zero operational waste to landfill by 2030 alongside a recycling rate ambition of 80%.

The company is well on its way to achieve these ambitions with 98% of operational waste having been diverted from landfill and 59% of overall operational waste having been recycled.

Society support

Moreover, the business has partnered with charity and social business Social Bite.

M&B aims to raise £1m in funds to support the provision of food and drink as well as a Jobs First Programme at the pub company, meaning it will provide real job opportunities for those looking to get back into work.

Future plans include aiding in the development of a new ‘village’ - offering housing to support those impacted by homelessness.
