The search is specifically targeting hoteliers across the UK, as part of plans to grow from c.800 to 1,000 sites nationwide. It is also welcoming enquiries from other sectors.
As hotel operators look to maximise profits and utilise spaces, they run the risk of developing and operating underperforming bars and restaurants, according to Christie & Co. A franchise partnership with JDW can support the cost-effective conversion of an existing space, the advisor has said.
Powerful brand
JDW opened its first franchised pub in Hull University’s student union in January 2022. The second opened at Newcastle University in September 2023, and the third at Haven Primrose Valley Holiday Park, Filey, North Yorkshire in March 2024.
The company expects to open a further five franchise pubs in the second half of the current financial year. Four of these will be at Haven Holiday Parks.
Franchise partners will have support from the pub company’s expertise, design teams, supply chain, training, and marketing resources.
Christie & Co senior director Simon Chaplin said, “We are delighted to be assisting such a powerful brand as Wetherspoon in using this route to expand.
Successful partnerships
“We have considerable hospitality expertise across the UK which, combined with our work in franchising, should help us secure a number of new Wetherspoon franchisees in the coming months, with several conversations already underway.”
The news comes as the pub chain shared it was also considering opening pub franchises overseas, after a string of successful partnerships in the UK.
JDW could open in holiday destinations popular with Brits, such as Alicante, Benidorm and Majorca, but may also target winter sun destinations, chairman Tim Martin said earlier this year.
In February, he revealed the rise in employer National Insurance contributions will cost Wetherspoon £1.2m per week.
