Pub operator Brakspear is expanding its Honeycomb Houses managed division with the acquisition of two pubs in the Cotswolds.

It has purchased the Kings Head in Cirencester, a large town centre hotel, restaurant and functions venue and the Redesdale Arms, a Grade II-listed building in Moreton-in-Marsh – taking its total estate up to 12 sites.

No financial details of the purchases were disclosed.

Originally a 14th century coaching inn, the Kings Head, which was purchased from administrators, is a three-storey building in the town’s Market Square comprising of 66 bedrooms, a restaurant and several events spaces.

Strengthening offer

It also has an established, sizeable weddings and events business, offering ceremonies for up to 150 guests in its Assembly Room, or for 80 people on its roof terrace.

The Redesdale Arms, a traditional Cotswold stone building dating back to 1661, was purchased from Redesdale Arms Limited. The pub retains many original features including oak beams, open fireplaces and other period details. Accommodation is provided in 35 en-suite rooms in the main building and converted stable blocks with AA 3-star hotel accreditation.

Brakspear chief executive Tom Davies said: “The Kings Head is a multifaceted business that strengthens our offer in the Cotswolds, particularly for weddings and functions. With 66 bedrooms, it also becomes our biggest site with accommodation.”

Crossover trade

He added: “Adding a pub in Moreton-in-Marsh consolidates our presence in the area, alongside our existing, successful sites in nearby towns such as Stow-on-the-Wold and Shipston-on-Stour.

“We already benefit from healthy ‘crossover’ trade between our Cotswolds sites, and this gives us another pub where we can offer our guests the Honeycomb House experience.”

Brakspear’s Honeycomb Houses managed division was founded in 2013 with the opening of The Bell on Bull Street in Henley-on-Thames. The estate has previously grown through acquisition and transfers from Brakspear’s leased and tenanted division.
