South-east-based business Shepherd Neame has announced managing director of pubs Jonathon Swaine is stepping down from the role and as a director on Thursday 17 April.

The 288-strong company also revealed in light of its decision to reduce the number of managed houses, it planned to reorganised roles and responsibilities to reflect the composition of its pub estate.

These roles will report into CEO Jonathan Neame and CFO Mark Rider, who will take on the added responsibilities.

Swaine joined the business in 2022 and has spent the majority of his career in the pub industry including roles at Bass and Fuller’s.

Last year, Shepherd Neame took the title of Best Partnership Pub Company (up to 500 sites) at the 2024 Publican Awards.

Well positioned

Chairman Richard Oldfield said: “The board would like to thank Jonathon for his contribution over the past three years and for developing our pub business so as to be well positioned for the future.

“We wish him well in his next endeavour.”

Just last month (March), the business warned it would need to mitigate unwelcome cost increases from the Budget by raising prices and finding efficiencies.

The Kent-based pub operator and brewer said national living wage and national insurance contribution rises would cost the company £2.6m, with incremental costs commencing in April and impacting the final quarter of the 2025 financial year.

Previous update

Furthermore, at the time it reported it had 10 sites under review for transfer from retail to tenancy over the next 12 months to improve returns and was reviewing its annual core capex spend.

The family brewery reported profit for the 26 weeks ending 28 December 2024, particularly in its managed and London estate.

Meanwhile, the business reopened the Westminster Arms in London after a £1.2m refurbishment also in March.

This followed the reopening of its renovated riverside pub the Britannia in Guildford, Surrey in February, following a £300,000 makeover.
