Over half (52%) of Brits are planning or considering a ‘pub-cation’ this Easter – a new Airbnb study has revealed.

The research showed consumers are looking for that rural getaway centered around staying in or visiting nearby pubs.

A well-loved pub is often the deciding factor on where to go with 29% of those surveyed admitting they choose where they travel based on the location’s proximity to a pub.

In fact, Airbnb revealed it has seen an increase in bookings for the UK countryside by 71% for this year’s Easter bank holiday weekend vs 2024.

The research of 2,000 consumers found that nearly half (47%) said the draw of a pub was due to a good pub meal and wholesome classics, from fish and chips to Sunday roasts.

For 39%, it was the comforting and traditional menus that offer something for everyone.

Country pubs

Airbnb UK partnerships & external affairs lead Luke Impett said: “Easter is the ideal time to reset, and our research shows that people in the UK love heading to the countryside for a cosy pub meal. In fact, 37% pick a country pub as their top place to meet up with family and friends during Easter.”

He added: “Pubs serve as the vibrant hubs of the community - landlords who know their regulars, stories shared over hearty meals in a homely atmosphere. We’re proud to help our guests find the perfect stay, whether it’s a cosy spot just steps from their nearest tavern to actually staying within these charming pubs themselves.”

The news comes as Airbnb revealed the results of a new initiative with the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) to transform independent pubs’ spare rooms into income-boosting guest stays.

The scheme, which launched in November 2024, offered three pubs the chance of a £10,000 makeover to complete the renovation of a spare room.

Winning pubs

The three competition winning pubs in Dorset, Hampshire and Derbyshire are now able to use the revamped rooms to welcome overnight visitors for the very first time.

The Thomas Tripp in Christchurch, Dorset was able to transform an empty kitchen unit upstairs into a new offering for overnight guests, encouraging more travellers to explore local attractions such as Southbourne Beach.

The Townhouse in Lymington, Hampshire has been able to transform two upstairs rooms into contemporary guest suites.

Lastly, The Swan Inn in Milton, Derbyshire has a newly renovated guest room adorned with traditional Balmoral tartan.

The winning pubs were selected by a panel of esteemed judges including: Dame Caroline Dinenage, chair of the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee; Chris Webb MP, chair of the Hospitality and Tourism All Party Parliamentary Group; and Gary Timmins, CAMRA Pub and Club Campaigns Director.
