Picturesque route: the Hornsmill at Helsby is within easy reach of the Sandstone Trail (Hydes)

North-west based business Hydes Brewery has highlighted a collection of its pubs in a bid to celebrate the great outdoors, as part of National Walking Month.

May marks the start of National Walking Month, a scheme that encourages people to get out of the house and bring walking into their routines, and Hydes has provided an incentive to explore the many stunning country parks and rivers in and around Greater Manchester.

Some 10 characterful pubs in the area were named by the brewery as being worth the walk.

The Joshua Bradley in Stockport, built within a restored mansion house, is surrounded by the green pastures of the Werneth Low Country Park and offers a wide range of food.

The Pack Horse, in Bury, offers walkers refreshment and direct access to Top o’th’ Knotts, a contouring farmland stroll with full views over Bolton to Winter Hill.

Nearby to the Sandstone Trail sits the Hornsmill at Helsby, which offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere before embarking on one of Cheshire’s most picturesque long-distance trails.

Also in Cheshire lies the Stamford Bridge Country Inn pub in Tarvin, which features a large outdoor garden to enjoy a drink before exploring the nearby Roman Trails.

The Harry Beswick in Heswall is close to the coastal pathway known as the Wirral Way, a disused railway line with scenic views over the Dee Estuary.

Another scenic walk located on the Dee Estuary is on the RSPB nature reserve, featuring marshes, salt flats, and the Boathouse in Parkgate, which is a popular spot for birdwatchers and nature lovers.

Leading from the estuary along the river lies the Mount Inn in Chester, located close to the historic city walls.

The Coach and Four, an 18th-century coach house, is nearby to The Carrs and Styal Country Park situated along the River Bollin.

The John Millington in Cheadle Hulme is placed near Happy Valley Nature Reserve and Bramhall Park.

Located near the Welsh border, the Golden Lion in Rossett encourages visitors to enjoy peaceful, riverside walks, and is thought to be haunted by a peaceful ghost known as ‘Old Jeffrey.’

Hydes managing director Adam Mayers said: “Throughout May, we’ll also be offering local walking suggestions and making sure our venues are as walk-friendly as possible—from dog-friendly beer gardens to cosy spots to relax after a day outdoors.

“We’re proud to be part of these stunning local landscapes.”

Hydes operates more than 40 pubs across the north-west of England and north Wales and specialises in brewing their cask and craft house ales.
