Hunt is on for pub staff ‘Matchday G.O.A.Ts’

Sky Business is on the hunt for the best in the world of pubs on sporting matchdays – or what it is calling “the Matchday G.O.A.T – the Greatest of All Trade”.

From the licensee who always has the sound on when screening sports, no matter what, to the kitchen team that gets the food out fast when the bar is five deep, to the bar staff pulling pints and keeping the atmosphere alive.

What’s more, those who win the competition will receive VIP sporting experiences.

Broadcaster and former Soccer AM presenter Helen Chamberlain is backing the campaign and explained why the people behind the scenes deserve the spotlight: “There are so many unsung heroes in the pub and bar trade that we need to hear about, whether it’s the team at the back making the sandwiches for half time, or whether it’s the licensee who’s been behind the bar for years and knows everyone’s name.

“All of these people. We need to hear about them. We need to hear their stories. We need to know about them. We need to know who they are. And we need to celebrate them.”

Nominations called for

Sky Business is calling on licensees, managers, colleagues and teams to nominate their own Matchday G.O.A.T. It could be anyone helping to deliver a brilliant matchday experience – on the floor, in the kitchen or behind the scenes.

Chamberlain also spoke about the sense of community that pubs create around sport: “The most special pub to me is the Dolphin in St Mary Church in Torquay, because I was a member of the Dolphin Ladies Darts team when I was 19 years old.

“It’s the people. It’s the regulars sitting on the same stool they set up 30 years ago, and the youngsters at the front with their football colours on.

“You just cannot buy that atmosphere. You cannot fake it. It’s community. It’s magic.”

VIP sporting experiences

Nominations are open now and remain so until 8 June 2025. Entries can be submitted at areyouthegoat.sky.com, telling the story of the person who deserves to be crowned a Matchday G.O.A.T.

There are 10 prizes up for grabs, which include four winners receiving a VIP sporting experience of their choice – including Premier League hospitality, Rugby Super League Grand Final packages, international cricket tickets, or a day at the British Grand Prix.

Meanwhile, six runners-up will each win a tech bundle, featuring an iPad, Beats headphones and a Sonos Roam speaker.

To be eligible, nominees must be aged 18 or over and work at licensed venues with an active Sky Business subscription.
