Market pressures: Sussex brewer Brighton Bier ceases trading

Sussex brewery Brighton Bier is the latest casualty of the challenging market as it has announced it has ceased trading.

The brewery, which was established in 2012, sold beers across the UK and also exported to Europe and Asia. It operated from Bell Tower Industrial Estate, Roedean Road, Brighton.

The closure does not affect its sites, Brighton Bierhaus, Haus on the Hill, The Drop or West Tap, as these are all separate businesses and will continue to trade as normal.

In a statement the brewery said: “We have fought hard and done everything we possibly could to avoid reaching this point.

Market pressures

“Sadly market pressures with reduced margins, high costs, and increases in price of materials, combined with the current economic conditions has forced us to close the brewery.

“We would like to thank all our customers over the years. It has been a pleasure working with you and we thank you for your support.”

The brewery produced a range of beers including Brighton Bier Thirty Three, a session Golden Ale at 3.3% ABV to a Grand Porter at 5.2% ABV.

In May, it was found the perfect storm of mounting cost pressures had seen 43 breweries become insolvent in the last year.

Survival mode

The research from national accountancy group UHY Hacker Young found that small, independent craft beer producers have been impacted by increases in minimum wage, National Insurance, along with inflation across ingredients, brewing, equipment and energy bills.

Other breweries it highlighted as closing included names such as Fourpure, By The Horns, Magic Rock Brewery, Burton Town Brewery and Wild Weather Ales.

Recently, the Society of Independent Brewers & Associates revealed that making sustainable profits was a challenge for small brewers.

Its research found that 46% of small brewers said they were in “survival mode” – up from 43% last year, while eight out of 10 had made no major investment in their business in 2024.
