Last month, publicans of the Malt Shovel in Horsham, Sam and Marie-Clare Clayton, shared they were leaving the venue, which is known locally for live music, after being at the pub for the past 12 years.
While the duo did not share the reason behind the decision, a post on Instagram stated it was “not what they wanted”.
The post said: “It is with devastation and great sadness we must announce our departure from the Malt Shovel after 12 wonderful years.
Irreplaceable memories
“We will not discuss the reasons for that in this post, but it is not what we wanted. We have raised our five children here, made many new friends and harvested a wealth of irreplaceable memories.
“The friends we have made, the musicians that have played here and the staff we have, and have had, have made these 12 years absolutely wonderful for us and our children.”
It added all bookings for live performances at the pub, which is owned by Stonegate, after July would be “null and void”.
“I contemplated a long, laborious post about the state of the world, capitalism, loss of another family run business and grass roots venue blah, blah, blah. But no. Just know that we have had a wonderful run and will miss you all greatly.
Fortnight to remember
“Huge love and thanks to all that have supported us over the years. There will be more posts, with more thanks. But, for now, please know that we love you all, and look forward to saying goodbye over the next couple of months”, the statement continued.
Following the announcement, the operators shared plans to host as many bands and musicians as possible over the next fortnight for a last hurrah.
A post on the pub’s Facebook page yesterday (Monday 30 June) said: “So this is it. The July Goodbye is here and we have tried to squeeze in as many of our favourite bands and musicians from over the last 12 years as possible! Let’s make it a fortnight to remember. See you at the bar.”
