Based in Holbeck, Leeds, the craft brewer and pub retailer, which was founded in 2013 by Russell Bisset and Brian Dickson, brews a diverse range of beers including its flagship Hazy Pale Ale, Faith. It also operates four bars in Leeds, Manchester, and most recently, Edinburgh, with Bradford and York also in development.
The report highlighted its successes in sustainability with over 80% of waste being recycled or repurposed in support of the brewery’s zero waste to landfill ambition.
It also revealed its commitment to be carbon zero in direct operations by 2030, which was supported by a shift to a 100% renewable energy tariff. This has already saved 170 tonnes of CO₂e and nearly £20,000 annually, with almost 20% of staff being carbon literacy trained.
Staff development
Northern Monk’s people strategy saw it invest £33,000 in staff development with 36 internal promotions. It also detailed the wide range of employee perks the company has introduced which have been designed to support wellbeing, growth and inclusion.
It also revealed Northern Monk was recognised as the UK’s second Best Company to Work For in the Food & Drink Sector (2024), and 26th best mid-sized company overall, according to Best Companies.
In its investment in community Northern Monk has raised £115,000 to date through its Faith in Futures Foundation, supporting 22 causes. It also has long-term charity partnerships with Holbeck Together, Pyramid, and Restoring Hardknott Forest.
Real progress
Bisset, founder and managing director of Northern Monk, said: “When we started Northern Monk from a cellar in Bradford, our goal was simple: to brew great beer, build community, and leave the world a little better than we found it.
“This report marks real progress, from moving closer to carbon zero, to raising over £100,000 for community causes and building a more inclusive and purposeful workplace. We’re proud of how far we’ve come, and excited about what’s ahead.”
Ciaran Shier, operations and positive impact director, said the report was a “major milestone” for Northern Monk.
“It brings together the work that’s been happening across every part of the business to reduce our environmental impact, support our people, and give back to the communities we’re part of,” Shier said.
“It’s a privilege to share the progress that’s been made, the impact we’ve had so far, and the future goals we’re committed to working towards.”
