The British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) has called on the Government to extend pub opening hours during this year’s Women’s Rugby World Cup.

The trade body’s chief executive Emma McClarkin said the move would boost celebrations, promote inclusivity in sport, and drive trade.

The BBPA has strongly welcomed the recent decision to permit a contingent relaxation of licensing hours during the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 semi-finals and final.

The BBPA said the this was exactly the kind of pragmatic, proportionate step that supports both public celebration and the hospitality sector, while marking the exceptional significance of major sporting occasions.

National interest

The BBPA said the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 will be the first time the tournament is hosted in England in more than a decade and is expected to draw record crowds and huge national interest, especially if the home nations reach the final stages.

McClarkin said: “As the national home of live sport, pubs will play a central role in uniting communities and supporting the tournament’s success.

“Extending licensing hours will ensure this landmark tournament receives the recognition it deserves, promote inclusivity in sport and score points for the economy and country’s mood.”

Licensing extension

The tournament is scheduled to take place in England between 22 August and 27 September 2025.

The call follows news that the Licensing Hours Extension Bill has made its way through the House of Commons. It will amend the Licensing Act 2003 to allow the Government to change licensing hours at times of national importance. Currently, the Government is unable to do this unless Parliament is sitting.

The Bill has cross party support and it about to enter the House of Lords for scrutiny.
