PubAid is calling on pubs across the UK to take part in vital new research that will spotlight the powerful role they play in supporting grassroots sport.

This is part of a new campaign called Pubs Power Sport, backed by headline sponsors Guinness and Sky Business, to shine a light on the fundamental role pubs play in sustaining grassroots sport and community wellbeing across the UK.

Pubs Power Sport is undertaking the nationwide research for the campaign that will celebrate the pubs and publicans sponsoring kits, hosting team socials, and fundraising for local teams all while offering a place for fans to gather and celebrate.

Grassroots sport

This research will build on PubAid’s 2019 findings that pubs raise over £40m annually for grassroots sport.

This year’s initiative will gather fresh data to demonstrate just how essential pubs are to local teams, from Sunday league football to darts and cricket, and to highlight the wider impact on community wellbeing, mental health, and social connection.

Publicans are invited to complete a short survey to share how they support sport in their area. In doing so, they’ll be part of a national report and could win football tickets courtesy of Guinness and Sky Business.

Vital contribution

PubAid co-founder Des O’Flanagan said: “Behind nearly every grassroots team is a pub offering space and support. Pubs Power Sport is about recognising that vital contribution and celebrating it properly.”

PubAid is a working party created in 2009 and runs the annual World’s Biggest Pub Quiz, which has raised £750,000 since its launch in 2016 and the Community Pub Hero Awards.

The PubAid steering group is led by co-founder Des O’Flanagan and includes a number of well-known figures from the industry, who lend their time and other resources to help spread the positive messages about pubs.
