Four-years on from the outstanding restoration of the Black Friar, the pub’s team of owner Neil Burke and exec chef Ben Chaplin are set to bring their gastro flair to Chorlton, as they take over the Horse and Jockey.

The 200-year-old pub, which is one of the oldest sites in the Joseph Holt estate, is now set to be relaunched as Chorlton’s first ever gastropub.

The Black Friar has quickly built a strong reputation after being rescued from redevelopment in 2021 after it had lain derelict for 15 years, under Burke’s leadership, and he’s looking to inject the same energy into the Horse and Jockey.

“Ben and I are chomping at the bit to get the Horse and Jockey living up to its full potential,” he said. “As with the Black Friar, we want to create a pub that heavily focuses on great British produce in a beautiful environment.

“We’re over the moon to be taking on a true suburban gem that’s all about the community. The Horse and Jockey will be a place where everyone is welcome whether they’re popping in for a pint, having a roast after a leisurely Sunday walk, or throwing a bash to celebrate a milestone.”

The relaunched site is set to reopen in the autumn following a short closure for refurbishment in September, with the new design paying homage to the building historic status, highlighting original features with a stripped back decor and heritage colours.

In keeping with the high quality The Black Friar is known for, Chaplin intends to introduce an ever-changing menu focusing on fresh local ingredients to the Horse and Jockey, including “pub grub” classics, premium á la carte dishes, weekly specials and a fresh take on The Black Friar’s legendary Sunday roasts.

Meanwhile, behind the bar, lovers of Joseph Holt ales will still be able to enjoy a selection of their award-winning beers. They’ll also be joined by a curated wine list designed for food pairing, and a brand-new cocktail menu and tasty new bar snacks.

Richard Kershaw, CEO of Joseph Holt, said: “This is a dynamic move forward for the Horse and Jockey. Neil and Ben have created something really special with the Black Friar, blending fantastic food with great ambience, style and design.

“We’re excited to see that vision come to life at the Horse and Jockey, creating a pub that’s both rooted in the community and a place for destination dining in its own right.

“We really are thrilled about the future of the Horse and Jockey. Neil and Ben bring creativity, passion, and an eye for detail - we can’t wait to see their vision elevate this historic pub to even greater heights.”
