The latest Office of National Statistics (ONS) have showed that the estimated number of job vacancies in the UK fell by 44,000 (5.8%) on the quarter, to 718,000, in May to July 2025.
This is the 37th consecutive period where vacancy numbers have dropped compared with the previous three months, with vacancies decreasing in 16 of the 18 industry sectors.
The data also revealed that payrolled employees in the UK fell by 149,000 (0.5%) between June 2024 and June 2025, and by 26,000 (0.1%) between May 2025 and June 2025.
Stark figures
The ONS said feedback from its Vacancy Survey suggested that some firms may not be recruiting new workers or replacing workers who have left.
BBPA CEO Emma McClarkin said: “These stark figures are exactly the reason why the Chancellor must look again at how mitigate the shocking new employment costs so businesses can better plan and continue to employ staff they need, rather than staff they can afford.
“Our sector, which is millions of people’s first step on the career ladder, provides significant employment opportunities for people and those seeking flexible work. Not only that, but their families also rely on them to bring home a wage to help pay the bills.”
Tough decisions
McClarkin said that brewers and pubs will have to make “tough decisions” given the Budget’s rise in National Insurance Contributions and increased wage costs.
“We urge the Government to reduce the staggering cost of doing business for our sector, including the urgent delivery of meaningful business rate reforms. Only then can we continue to be the backbone of the UK job market and a cornerstone of the community,” she added.
