The finalists for the Admiral Taverns Pub of the Year showcase innovation, high standards and community spirit.

The Chrystal Bell, Gallowgate, Glasgow, Scotland

Located in Gallowgate, Glasgow, the Chrystal Bell has been run by Angi McKean for the past two years.

The wet-led pub welcomes locals and tourists alike, offering 13 beer lines including Carling, Tennent’s, John Smith’s, Guinness, Moretti, and Magners Dark Fruit alongside a good range of spirits.

A regular schedule of entertainment is also on offer, including karaoke, games nights and live sport shown on multiple screens throughout the venue. Events are also held to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust and local food banks.

The pub has won multiple awards with Proper Pubs for going the extra mile within the community.

The Gasoline, Chesterfield, Derbyshire

The Gasoline is an American themed bar in Chesterfield, run by Phil Deacon, who has been at the helm since 2016.

A variety of events are on offer at the Gasoline, from line dancing to live sport. The venue also has a private karaoke booth, retro arcade games, shuffleboard, pool, a photobooth, a jukebox, a ‘VIP’ area and holds an annual fundraiser for the local cancer hospice.

Boasting 13 lines, there is a good range of beer on offer including Jubel, Boddingtons, Blue Moon, Magners, Orchard Pig, Neck Oil, Cruzcampo, Alpacalypse, and Guinness.

While the pub is wet-led, a food menu is available, including nachos, fries, wings and other small plates.

The Rising Sun, Brentwood, Essex

The Rising Sun Inn is an over-21s wet-led pub in Brentwood, Essex, that has carved out a strong local following through a blend of traditional hospitality, quirky décor and modern innovation.

A pizza oven was introduced by licensee Ian Boyd around two years ago and the pub provides table service for drinks.

Beers including Jubel, Alapcalypse, Guinness, Timothy Taylor Landlord, Aspall Cyder, Carlsberg, and Greene King IPA are available as well as an extensive gin collection.

Multiple TVs throughout the pub cater to sports fans, making it a lively spot during match days. The Rising Sun also hosts raffles for local charities as well as weekly quizzes.

The Castle, Swindon, Wiltshire

The Castle is a community pub in Swindon, boasting a large suntrap garden, traditional pub games and a multitude of regular events.

Licensee Audrey Kamugisha has been at the Castle for the past three years and has made the pub a hub for the community, taking part in local charity events and supporting the area.

The Castle has two cask lines and 16 keg lines, with Orchard Pig, Camden Helles and Pale Ale, Old Mout Berries & Cherrie, Madri, Thatcher’s, Carling, and Guinness on the bar.

While still a wet-led pub, Kamugisha recently introduced a food offer at the Castle, available Wednesday to Sunday, including pizzas, hot dogs, burgers, chips, wings and salads.

The Sun, Birchington, Kent

Located in Birchington, Canterbury, the Sun is a community pub with something for everyone, led by award-winning operator Sarah Falconer since 2021.

The pub is popular with diners and drinkers, though remains wet-led, and is frequented by locals and destination visitors alike.

Raising money for the village church, supporting local schools and hosting free coffee mornings every Tuesday, the Sun is at the heart of the community and has a schedule of regular events, from live music and comedy to Backgammon and open mic nights.

Beers available include St Austell Brewery Tribute, Magners, Fosters and Guinness as well as a solid no and low offer, such as Ghost Ship and Guinness.

The Tavern, Hatton, Derbyshire

Sitting in the south Derbyshire village of Hatton, the Tavern is a wet-led family-friendly pub with community at its core.

Guests can enjoy everything from boozy milkshakes to bottomless brunches alongside an extensive gin collection. A variety of beers, including Bass, San Miguel, Neck Oil, Carling and Camden are also available as well as a range of bar snacks.

A variety of events are held at the Tavern, including live music and quizzes, with bouncy castles also on offer in the garden during the summer months.

Sports is another key driver for the Tavern, which has two darts teams, a dominoes team and sponsors the local football and golf club. It also hosts regular fundraisers for local charities.
