The Law pub on the High Street in North Berwick, which was previously known as the County Hotel, will reopen on Wednesday 17 September with new licensee Donna McCallum at the helm after being closed since 2019.
Boasting two bars, a large beer garden, restaurant and bedrooms, the venue has been transformed with a new look, inspired by the local area, to compliment its new name.
McCallum said: “I’ve lived in North Berwick for years and never dreamed one day I would run the Law. It’s great news for the town to have it open again and looking so fantastic – it’s a real asset. The whole team is excited to be welcoming people in for the first time in six years.”
Contemporary bar
The ground floor offers a contemporary front bar with screens showing major sports tournaments like the Six Nations and Ryder Cup while the second bar, the Beach Hut, which has bee converted from a former stable, overlooks the rear garden and has its own pizza oven.
Upstairs, there is a revamped restaurant and 11 ensuite letting rooms, each named after a Scottish malt whisky.
On the food and drink front, the menu includes pub classics as well as a la carte specials, all prepared using seasonal, locally sourced produce wherever possible. Given the Law’s seaside location, seafood dishes are a specialty.
Meanwhile, the drinks selection offers everything from barista quality coffee to cocktails and premium whiskies.
The dog friendly venue, which is thought to date back to 1815, also has a canine menu, including doggy meals and biscuits.
Something different
Star Pubs operations director for Scotland Matt Dyson said: “This is our largest investment of the year in Scotland, and it’s reflected in the transformation – the Law looks amazing and completely unrecognisable inside.
“The Discovery Group are just the team to relaunch the Law – they’ve got a reputation for operating superb venues across East Scotland.
“We’re delighted to be backing them with their latest venture. The many unique touches they’ve given The Law, will bring something different to North Berwick.”
The Law marks the second pub in the area for the Discovery Group, which also operates the Ship Inn on Quality Street. In addition, the new opening has created 25 new jobs for the area.

We feel fortunate to have a second site here and want The Law to add to all the town has to offer.”
