Jodie Kidd has shut her West Sussex pub, the Half Moon at Kirdford, for three days this week after staff faced “verbal and physical abuse” from customers.

A post on the pub’s Facebook page said the team had worked hard to create a place for people to come together and asked for “respect” in return after staff had been subjected to “abuse” from customers.

Shared on Sunday 21 September, the post stated: “We’ve worked hard to create more than just a pub — we’ve built a home. A place for people to come together, enjoy good times, and make memories.

“While we know we won’t be to everyone’s taste, it saddens us that in recent weeks we as a team have faced abuse — both verbal and physical. We’d like to remind everyone behind the Half Moon is a team of people who care deeply about what we do. We are human.

“Independent businesses like ours work tirelessly, seven days a week, driven by passion, love, and integrity to give our best. All we ask in return is respect.

Short break

“If you ever feel the need to complain, please do so in a calm, constructive, and polite way, we’re always open to feedback that helps us improve.”

The model and TV presenter turned publican has run the pub, which has featured on the Top 50 Gastropub lists and boasts two AA Rosettes, since 2017 alongside two business partners.

A further post on the Grade II listed pub’s Facebook explained the business would be closed for three days this week to give the core team a “well-deserved short break”.

It said: “As many of you know, the work never truly stops behind the scenes, so taking some time to rest and recharge is essential.

“We will be closed on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this week, and will reopen on Thursday 25 September at 12 Noon as normal.”

It comes as a recent survey by PPL/PRS found hospitality staff often experience poor mental health as a direct result of unmanaged stress in their job.

Tough times

Additionally, separate data from charity Hospitality Action showed workers frequently suffer from burnout and a poor work/life balance.

Kidd has previously spoken to the Morning Advertiser (The MA) about the difficulties operators face and highlighted the importance of surrounding yourself with good people.

She said: “Your team is so important. The people you can rely on to support you, to help navigate, be shoulder to shoulder with you when the times get tough and you can sit and enjoy the wonderful ups and moments with as well.

“My team is like my family and I love and adore them all. Even the guys who have moved on I am still such good friends with 90% of them.”
