The Japanese beverage company said it had been the victim of a cyberattack on Monday 29 September, which had caused a system failure and temporarily stalled domestic operations.
However, the group has today (Tuesday 30 September) assured only its manufacturing operations in Japan were impacted and that European and UK beer supplies remain unaffected by the incident.
A spokesperson for Asahi told The Morning Advertiser (The MA): “Asahi is currently experiencing a cyber security incident, affecting operations in Japan. None of Asahi’s manufacturing operations in Europe, including its UK beer supply, are impacted by this incident.”
System failure
The system failure meant order and shipment operations as well as customer service and call centre operations were suspended in Japan.
There were no confirmed leaks of personal information or customer data to external parties following the cyberattack.
Asahi apologised for any inconvenience caused to customers and business partners and said the group was “actively investigating” the cause of the incident and working to restore operations. There is currently no estimated timeline for the recovery.
The group is known for its Asahi Super Dry beer, as well as its alcohol-free counterpart, but also owns global beer brands including Peroni, Pilsner Urquell and Grolsch.
Well-known brands
It also took on the Fullers brewery in 2019, which is based in Chiswick, London, and produces cask beers London Pride and Dark Star alongside cider brand Cornish Orchards.
Earlier this month, Asahi-owned Meantime Brewery announced plans to open a new multi-purpose pub in London’s Greenwich, called the Dial, with KG Hospitality.
Set across three floors, the venue, which is near the 02 and due to open in November, will combine a microbrewery, restaurant, sports bar, and live music space with a large outdoor terrace and a 360° view rooftop bar.
