Punch Pubs & Co has vowed to reopen a historic Shropshire pub later this month following concerns over its temporary closure during peak tourist season.

The Blue Boar in Ludlow closed for refurbishment in July after being run by leaseholder Adam Tutt and manager Emily Hardman for the past decade, following the end of the lease.

A £275k renovation project is currently underway at the Grade-II listed market town pub, which dates back to the 17th century, but Punch has said the Blue Boar will reopen under its management partnerships arm later this month.

While the pubco pledged to keep the venue at the heart of the community, Shropshire Councillor for Ludlow North, Andy Boddington, previously shared his concerns over the changes with The Morning Advertiser (The MA).

Critical time

Boddington also criticised Punch’s decision to shut the pub at a critical time of year for tourism in Ludlow, which he said had been hit by job losses following the closure of another pub, previously owned by the Oakman Group prior to it entering administration, and a café.

The Burton-upon-Trent pubco said the Blue Boar’s new look would preserve its authentic character and charm, while introducing a fresh twist that reflects both heritage and future.

Furniture has been reclaimed, and decorative light fittings have been sourced second-hand or antique, meanwhile the artwork and bric-a-brac in the pub has been inspired by Ludlow’s market, castle and tavern heritage. The upholstery has also been sourced sustainably.

Each room will pay homage to Ludlow’s medieval heritage, including a feature backboard, painted metal signs depicting market square scenes and old traders’ signage, which will serve as the Blue Boar’s focal artwork.

Outside, the garden has been designed for relaxed drinking and dining, featuring antique planters and clustered pots alongside pallet bench seating, set beneath a pergola frame illuminated by reclaimed copper and brass pendant lights.

Top priority

Management partners and experienced hospitality duo Helena Griffiths and Mark Tilston will take over the reins at the newly refurbished pub.

Punch head of operations Rupert Reeves said: “We are delighted with the changes at the Blue Boar so far.

“Above anything else, Punch is a business that strives to ensure our pubs thrive at the heart of their communities, and here in Ludlow, we’re doing just that.

“It is our top priority that guests within the community are proud of their local, and I’m confident once they see these changes, they’ll be proud to show it off.”
