Danks to leave Laine for Pure Gym

Laine MD Russell Danks has announced he is stepping down from the role after three years.

Joining the business as managing director in 2023, moving over from sister company Punch Pubs & Co where he was marketing and strategy director, Danks took over full leadership of the Laine Pub Company when co-founder Gavin George stepped down as CEO in September 2024.

During his tenure, the company has gone on to be named Best Partnership Pub Company and Best Late Night Operator in the Publican Awards 2025, and has seen the business expand out of its South East heartland of Brighton and London, opening pubs in Birmingham and Norwich.

Danks steps down at the end of the month before taking up a position with Pure Gym, the international health and fitness operator headed up by former Punch Pubs ceo Clive Chesser.

Tribute

Paying tribute to Danks, Punch Pubs & Co CEO, Andy Spencer, said: “Russ has been an enormous part of Punch’s journey over the past seven years. His creativity, energy, and ability to bring people together have helped shape who we are today.

“From being the architect of our much loved Pineapple to leading Laine with passion and purpose, Russ leaves a legacy that will be felt across the business for years to come. His leadership during the Covid period in particular, ensuring our people were informed, connected, and supported through constant change, was truly outstanding.

“We are incredibly grateful for everything Russ has brought to Punch, and we wish him every success in his next chapter. He leaves with our thanks, our respect, and our very best wishes for the future.”

The company said Sam Barnard, currently head of strategy and finance, will take interim responsibility for leading the Laine business while a successor is recruited.
