That is just one of the statistics gleaned from an exclusive survey by The Morning Advertiser (The MA) for The MA Labour Report, which is being launched in the week commencing Monday 30 March.
While almost 31% of survey respondents said being understaffed means they are unable to grow, 27% said their staff members are working longer hours than they would like them to be.
A further 27% said they have been forced to reduce their opening hours while 16% have had to simply either their menu or service style.

Cost pressures examined
The MA Labour Report looks at the pressures being faced by licensees when it comes to staffing their sites as costs rise, availability of employees becomes scarcer and customers are more likely to tighten their purse strings as UK and worldwide events affect disposable cash.
The report covers a multitude of aspects such as the variety of job roles available within the front and back of house and the expected wages per hour for each member of staff in those positions.
We also look at the costs associated with labour in the sector with a particular focus on how annual uplifts in the national living wage and national minimum wage are affecting pubs and bars.
Learning & development are aspects that must – and are – being considered by many pubcos who want to take talent on board, train them well and offer them further development opportunities in a bid to retain their skills within the business.
How to combat losses
What happens next is a big question for the industry and with so many jobs being lost, some of the best in the sector tell The MA how they are combating these losses – so there’s plenty of advice available for those willing to listen.
Finally, we take a look at how technology can be used to cover areas that either used to be fulfilled by staff members or it works out much more cost-effectively to use the computer intelligence available to the on-trade.
There’s so much to read in The MA Labour Report and it will be launched next week – and best of all, it’s absolutely FREE!
Keep an eye out for it and you’ll have access to it whenever you want.
