Pub behemoth JD Wetherspoon (JDW) is set to open two new airport pubs in Spain.

Both located at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona–El Prat airport, the first of the two airside pubs will open at Terminal 1 in September 2026 with the second opening in Terminal 2 in January 2027.

The pubs, as yet unnamed, will have a combined floor space of more than 5,700sqft, with space for up to almost 600 customers.

Operated by Ibersol Group, one of the largest franchised brand operators in Spanish and Portuguese travel, he pubs will be open seven days a week from 5am to 11pm.

Fantastic sites

Food will be served at all times up to an hour before closing.

The menu will include many meals available at JDW pubs in the UK, including breakfast dishes, burgers and pizzas, as well as local dishes.

Each venue will have its own individual carpet design and also serve real ale.

This comes just one month after the opening of the company’s first pub in Spain at Alicante Airport.

Commenting on the new sites, JDW founder and chairman Tim Martin said: “We are delighted to have secured two fantastic sites at Barcelona airport.

Overseas expansion

“In the short time since opening our pub at Alicante airport, it has proven popular with travellers and we are confident we can replicate that at our two new pubs in Barcelona.

“We aim to open a number of pubs overseas in the coming months and years, including those at airports.”

Earlier this month, the company announced in a trading update it planned to open around 15 managed pubs and 15 to 20 franchised outlets in the current financial year.

The business also reported like-for-like sales were up 4.8% from the first half (H1) of the company’s 2025 financial year (FY25) while revenue saw a 5.7% uplift to £1.09bn.
