Humphrey Smith, the long standing owner of Samuel Smith’s Brewery, has died aged 81, reports claim.

Smith was one of the best known and most distinctive figures in British brewing, having led the Tadcaster based business for decades.

Samuel Smith’s, which dates back to 1758 and describes itself as Yorkshire’s oldest brewery, operates a large pub estate across the UK and is known for its traditional approach to brewing and pubs.

Its venues have become known for strict house policies, including restrictions on mobile phones, music, television, swearing, children and dogs in a number of sites.

While the rules often divided opinion, supporters credited Smith with preserving traditional pubs, historic buildings and a quieter style of pub culture.

Reports of Smith’s death follow speculation in recent years about his role at the brewery and the future direction of the business.

Companies House records show Smith resigned as a director of Samuel Smith Old Brewery on 17 June 2026.

The York Press reported it had received verbal confirmation of his death from the brewery.

The Morning Advertiser (MA) has approached Samuel Smith’s Brewery for comment.
