The 16th century Butterleigh Inn in the village of Butterleigh, mid Devon, has been sold for an undisclosed figure in excess of the £350,000 asking price by Christie & Co. The Butterleigh Inn has been owned and operated by Jenny Hill since 1998 with the help of her brother Andy and his partner Deirdre. The new owners are David Reed and his wife, from nearby Ponsford, who are newcomers to the licensed trade. The pub offers home-cooked food and traditional real ales and is listed in The Good Pub Guide and The Good Beer Guide. A traditional Devonshire cob building, full of character, the Butterleigh Inn has a main bar, snug and lounge bar, commercial kitchen, five-bedroom owner's accommodation and a separate, detached converted garage block with a two-bedroom self-contained letting annexe. It stands within large grounds with private and trade gardens and car park. Gary Roberts of Christie's Exeter office, who negotiated the sale, said: "The fact that the business sold for a figure in excess of the asking price is an indication of the popularity of quality food-led country inns in the West Country.
