The Morning Advertiser has learnt that SAB Miller is in talks to acquire Slovakia's third-largest brewer Topvar. Privatised in 1994, Topvar, is now 51% owned by the management and 34% owned by company employees. It produces 600,000hl of beer per annum with 60% of production centred on the premium beer sector.
Camra kicks off Pub Design Awards
The Campaign for Real Ale launched its annual Pub Design Awards during National Pubs Week. The awards, run in conjunction with British Heritage and the Victorian Society, are aimed at recognising pub operators who commission the most innovative and imaginative designs. Britvic rolls out Make it a Proper Drink'
Britvic has unveiled a new banner, logo and label graphics for Britvic 55 and J2O. The new banner, "Make it a Proper Drink", aims to create a more eye-catching look on the shelf for adults. In addition, a limited-edition Apple & Raspberry J2O has been launched. "The Britvic revitalised portfolio will enable licensees to offer customers a soft drink for every occasion," said director of marketing Richard Collins.
SA Brain passes £100m turnover mark
Cardiff-based brewer and pub operator SA Brain has passed the £100m turnover milestone for the first time. It is the fifth consecutive year of significant growth with a pre-tax profit increase of 14% on last year. Brains' managed houses delivered a 17.5% sales growth.
Foster calls for power to hit rogue pubs
Liberal Democrat culture spokesman Don Foster wants police and local authorities to be given greater powers to crack down on rogue pubs and clubs. He claimed that Government measures to tackle binge drinking had only led to one prosecution in four years and even that proved unsuccessful. Foster said plans for longer opening hours should be put on hold until binge drinking is under control.
Coca-Cola turns to health drink market
Coca-Cola is planning to launch a new range of health drinks as sales continue to slide fuelled by mounting concerns over obesity. The health drinks will contain a plant extract called Phytosterol. The news follows on from Pepsi's announcement it was moving into the "smoothie" fruit drink market last week.
