JD Wetherspoon is set to build the greenest pub in the UK. The company wants to use a wind turbine to power a pub that is planned in Melton Mowbray.
Other energy-saving measures proposed include camouflaged solar water-heating panels on the roof and using rainwater to help flush toilets.
Architect for the scheme is RJD Architectural Design & Project Management, which stated: "Our client is looking for this development to be a flagship 'green pub', to set new standards in energy
efficiency.
"A variety of measures and new equipment will be used which it is hoped will see the pub using 50% less energy than a pub of similar size."
Energy would be generated by wind turbines and from solar panels "disguised so as not to stand out from the grey-slated roof", added the company.
If planning permission is granted, Wetherspoon hopes to start work before Christmas and open the pub around May.
The company is planning another eco-pub in Ipswich.
Mark Wetherill, of RJD Architectural Design & Project Management, added: "Wetherspoon is looking at building other pubs like this to reduce bills and because it's a greener solution.
"The process involves re-generating heat and water, so that it can be re-used, and the amount of conventional power can be reduced.
"This form of energy will be able to keep the inside of the pub warm enough. It's the first time it's ever been used in the leisure industry and it's fairly ground-breaking for this country."
