Ten thousand sign smoke petition

Licensees in Scotland hand in a 10,000 signature petition calling for ventilated smoking rooms

Licensees in Scotland have handed in a 10,000 signature petition calling for modifications to the smoking ban to allow ventilated smoking rooms.

Groups from Fife presented their petition to Christine May, MSP for Central Fife at a specially arranged meeting in Glenrothes.

The group outlined the "detrimental effects" the ban has had on their businesses.

Mrs May said that although she still supported the smoking ban, she had not realised the effect it was having on groups like ours Licensee David Nelson.

Members from Freedom to Choose Scotland, which wants to see regulated air quality monitoring introduced in pubs and clubs, were also present.

Licensee David Nelson, who runs a Fife club, said the meeting had been a success.

He told Fife Today: "For example, the smoking ban has cost us more than £80,000 since it was introduced in April.

"The Gunners Club in Kirkcaldy has lost over £50,000 and the British Legion in Glenrothes £36,000 in nine months.

"Between all the clubs which were represented at the meeting the total the ban has cost them was in excess of £350,000, which is an awful lot of money.

"It has also led to the cancellation of functions and outings, particularly those for elderly people."

MSP Christine May will put the petition before the Scottish Parliament's Petitions Committee for consideration.

"Mrs May said that although she still supported the smoking ban, she had not realised the effect it was having on groups like ours, and promised to do what she could to help us," added Nelson.
