More than a 10th of the best 100 restaurants in the country are pubs, according to the Estrella Damm National Restaurant Awards 2021.

The awards ceremony took place at The Stratford Hotel in east London last night (Monday 16 August).

The Angel at Hetton in Skipton, North Yorkshire, which is number 12 on the Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs list, took home the title of Gastropub of the Year.

Furthermore, Sally Abe’s new venture, the Pem in Westminster, central London was named as the One to Watch.

Specialist awards

Restaurateur of the Year was awarded to Tommy Banks from the Black Swan at Oldstead in North Yorkshire and Roots in York.

Moor Hall in Aughton, Lancashire was named the Estrella Damm National Restaurant of the Year for the second year in a row.

Celebrity chef and licensee Tom Kerridge was awarded the Outstanding Industry Contribution Award for his work creating Meals From Marlow amid the pandemic.

When lockdown was first announced last year, Kerridge and his teams produced heat-at-home meals for the Butcher’s Tap in Marlow, Buckinghamshire before he saw a tweet from local hospital Wexham Park, asking for help feeding staff.

The chef started a GoFundMe page, which ended up raising £180,000 and from this came Meals From Marlow – an initiative supporting NHS staff, key workers and people in need in the local area.

It provided more than 100,000 meals and has become a permanent charity, which aims to deliver 750 meals a week.

Kerridge has also teamed up with footballer Marcus Rashford and launched the Full Time campaign, which aims to end child poverty.
