BrewDog know mums love gin

BrewDog Distilling Co has released LoneWolf Dear Mum Gin in time for Mother’s Day on 27 March.

The spirit is said to be “bursting with citrus flavours, offering a marmalade hit that gives a zesty yet warming sensation on the palate” and has been made at the company’s new distillery in Aberdeen.

Dear Mum Gin is a limited-edition tipple with only 950 bottles being made that claim to have flavours of blood orange and candied orange peel while retaining its juniper bite, and is recommended to be served with tonic, ice and a blood orange slice.

BrewDog Distilling Co director Steven Kersley said: “Our bold and zesty Dear Mum gin has arrived just in time for the special day.  On top of LoneWolf’s audacious juniper backbone we’ve layered more flavour by distilling fresh botanicals such as, blood orange peel, sweet orange peel and a selection of fragrant spices including all spice, ginger, and cinnamon.

“The aroma is unmistakably LoneWolf, however, there’s top notes of candied orange and spicy ginger which when diluted with your favourite tonic balance perfectly against a bold juniper backdrop.  We should have distilled more than 950 bottles; this is a delicious gin.”

Dear Mum Gin 70cl is bottled at 40% ABV and has an RRP of £25

Oriental Spiced Gin from Whitley Neill

Gin brand Whitley Neill has announced the launch of its Oriental Spiced Gin variant.

The latest launch to the Halewood Artisanal Spirits portfolio has been inspired by founder Johnny Neill’s travels to the Indian subcontinent in the late 1990s and is distilled with a focus on the exotic flavours and aromas of the Orient. The juniper is complemented by “warm, gentle cardamom with bright sweet citrus, offering a juicy character followed by notes of cumin”. Its finish is said to be full of pepper and savoury spice.

Whitley Neill Gin marketing director James Stocker said: “The City of London Distillery and Bar, the home of Whitley Neill Gin, provides us with a fantastic tool to listen to what gin fans are looking for and experiment with new botanicals and flavour combinations. We’re seeing tremendous scope for growth within the dry gin category and our new Oriental Spiced Gin plays perfectly into this area with peppery and savoury spice notes – perfect for people with a more savoury palate.”

The eye-catching white bottle boasts detailed imagery of the exotic botanicals and spices (including coriander, turmeric, ginger, chilli, cumin, grains of paradise, saffron and star anise), that provide the gin with its unique flavour, all of which is guaranteed to stand out both on the shelf and behind the back bar.

Whitley Neil Oriental Spiced Gin (43% ABV) is available to order now with an RRP of £26.

Lakedown adds Vermont Pale Ale to range

East Sussex-based Lakedown Brewing Co has released Vermont Pale Ale (3.8% ABV), which it describes as a hazy, hoppy and fruity session pale ale.

The microbrewery that operates a taproom near lakes at Lakedown Trout Fishery, Burwash, is the brainchild of brothers-in-law Jamie Daltrey, Christopher Rule and Des Murphy, and is famed for being co-owned by The Who singer Roger Daltrey.

The light-coloured New England Pale style beer combines the Citra, Mosaic and Amarillo hops and adds to the producer’s range of beers that are suitable for vegan and flexitarian drinkers.

Bellfield makes beer for International Women’s Day

Bellfield Brewery celebrated International Women’s Day by producing an IPA.

In what has become somewhat of a tradition over the past few years, women at the Edinburgh company came together to create a beer for International Women’s Day. The latest is Rational Creatures IPA.

Bellfield said: “We began by tasting beers of similar styles and smelling a variety of hops that would achieve our desired, juicy, hop profile, settling on Idaho 7, El Dorado and Azaca as our main hops. It was great to be able to get together in real life in our beer garden this year, rather than the Zoom session we had last year.”

Rational Creatures IPA is pouring in the business’s taproom and £1 from each pint sold this week will be given to Scottish Women’s Aid.

Vocation sets focus on lower alcohol beers

Yorkshire craft brewer Vocation is set to launch a trio of new lower alcohol beers in a bid to open up the craft market to those wanting lower strength options.

The first of the trio is called Lower Altitude and is a 2.8% ABV table beer, which is made from a blend of Simcoe, Sabro and Talus hops to provide a flavour of tropical fruit, stone fruit and a hint of coconut.

Second up is Big Squeeze, a 4% ABV Mango Pale Ale. Big Squeeze is also available through the same channels as Low Altitude, including on draught in the on-trade. The flavoured pale ale is said to have a big, fruity mango flavour that is balanced with the citrussy, floral bitterness of Mosaic hops.

Vocation is also launching a 1% ABV beer called Permanent Vacation in collaboration with Mash Gang, the craft beer brewer that specialises in no and low-alcohol beers. The Hebden Bridge-based business said Permanent Vacation is a light and refreshing pale ale that has a heavy dose of summer citrus fruits and uses El Dorado, Talus, Simcoe and HBC 630 hops.

Vocation Brewery brewing director Matt Howgate said: “We’re really excited to be launching these three lower alcohol beers. We have been working for a long time to craft these lower ABV beers, which still have the big flavour profile expected of Vocation beers. We are delighted to have collaborated with the low and no-alcohol craft beer specialist Mash Gang to brew Permanent Vacation. This light and refreshing beer will transport you to the beach with its heavy dose of summer citrus fruits and its crisp, clean finish, which is much needed for many of us at this time of year.

“Lower Altitude is our first table beer and at 2.8% ABV provides a full flavoured beer that is more accessible to more drinkers and with Big Squeeze, we have squeezed as much mango into the beer as was humanly possible.”
