The sponsor also pledged £1,000 for each pub that is shortlisted, following the success of similar initiatives over the past couple of years.

Last year’s winner of the category was the Last Post Remembrance Bar & Museum in Thornaby, North Yorkshire.

The venue used its £10,000 prize money to boost the support and educational services it provides in its local area.

Now there is a minibus to take elderly and isolated members of the community on trips out as well has housing interactive digital displays in its warm memorial museum, to help make the experience more engaged for school-aged children.

Deadline extension

With the deadline for entry now having been extended, pubs have been urged to make the most of this opportunity.

The Morning Advertiser, which organises the awards, editor Ed Bedington said: “We’ve just extended the entry window until this Sunday (29 May) and we hope this generous update from Coca-Cola inspires more pubs to take advantage while they can.

“We’re urging every pub to enter now – into the Community Hero category and others – as we continue our efforts to highlight how much incredible work there is to be so proud of in the UK pub and bar sector.”

The finalists in the  Community Hero category last year donated their Coca-Cola funding causes close to their hearts, which included a children’s charity, a food sharing service and a memory café that helps those living with dementia.

Coca-Cola Europacific Partners senior community partnerships manager Holly Firmin said: “The past few years have laid bare the importance of community. Pubs have provided a lifeline for so many people – despite many licensees facing hardships themselves, especially when we were going in and out of lockdown.

“While the worst of the pandemic is behind us, we are still living in challenging times and must do our bit to support each other. Since we launched the Coca-Cola Community Pub Fund as part of the 2020 Great British Pub Awards, we have loved seeing outlets use it to take their charity and community work to the next level."
