Joe Buckley and Flo Pearce from the Tollemache Arms in Harrington, Northampton have been named the British Institute of Innkeeping (BII)’s 2023 Licensee of the Year.

The duo fought off competition from more than 300 entrants, which was whittled down to a shortlist of six last month (May).

Finalists had the chance to assess their business at every stage, from mystery customer reports and judging visit feedback through to the final judging day at Sky HQ on Monday (19 June).

All six finalists were presented with a trophy at the BII’s Summer Event yesterday (Tuesday 20 June) where the winner was also announced.

Long journey

On how it felt to be crowned License of the Year 2023, Buckley told The Morning Advertiser: “Speechless really, it has been a long journey. It takes a while to enter these awards so it’s amazing to be recognised by a prestigious award.

“It’s something we’ve looked up to for years so to win it is amazing.”

The 17th century pub is loved by its community and uses locally-sourced products, providing a wide range of menu options. Pearce outlined how the pub stands out from others.

“Our attention to detail, customer service, great food, just an all-round amazing environment to work in.

“We’ve got an incredible unit and a great team that want to drive people to the heart of it.”

Supporting local

The duo also highlight advice on how other operators can ensure success within their businesses.

Buckley said: “Work on your USP, whether that’s in terms of retention of staff. We have put in a few things [such as] private healthcare cover, gyms, things that really make their life better.

“It’s not all about what you pay them, it’s how you create a great life for them as well.

“Supporting local in as many ways as possible, suppliers, customers, staff and doing your best for the community
