The Riverside at Aymestrey in Herefordshire took home the title of Best Sustainable Pub at the 2022 Great British Pub Awards, wowing the judges with initiatives such as growing its own produce, offering nature walks to guests, championing local food and drink as well as running a fundraising initiative to support local sustainability projects.

Chef-patron Andy Link outlined why the pub puts sustainability at its heart and how its customers and staff are all part of the journey.

Meanwhile, the British Institute of Innkeeping (BII) has recently launched a new award that aims to recognise pubs driving sustainable change. The BII Sustainability Champion Award looks to reward pubs and teams that have demonstrated "exceptional" leadership, innovation and dedication to implementing sustainable practices.

Chief executive Steve Alton highlighted this new award and laid out how he sees the sector is doing as a whole when it comes to being environmentally friendly.

Moreover, we also spoke with Zero Carbon Forum founder and CEO Mark Chapman, who advised how operators can best reduce their carbon footprint.
