What’s on the Bar with the Red Lion, Shepperton

The pub took home the title of Star Pubs & Bars Pub of the Year​ at the 2022 Great British Pub Awards.

Judges lauded the site for every inch having been optimised to develop its potential alongside a strong emphasis on creating a fantastic customer experience.

Furthermore, the pub hosts a plethora of events including Christmas wreath making and candle making workshops, quiz nights and a meet the winemaker experience.

The Morning Advertiser ​caught up with co-operator Steve Orme to find out about the varied drinks offer at the pub including a two permanent real ale options, a strong lager line up as well as great wines and spirits.

The pub was also a test site for one alcohol-free product on draught and Steve outlined the impact on his no and low sales as a result.

Wines come from a friend of Steve’s who is a supplier and the pub hosts regular wine tasting evenings.

A list of 12 whites, 12 reds, four rosés and a handful of sparkling options show wine is taken seriously at the Surrey venue with a mixture of options including big names and tipples from areas such as Romania.

Steve is passionate about cocktails, learning and sharing the stories and history of the drinks to staff and customers alike.

He said: “If you’re going to make things, make them classic and right or don’t do them at all. I’d rather have a shorter list of greatly made drinks than a really big list that you hardly ever make or can’t make correctly.”
