Beer here now: licensee Sue Hawley hopes the new mural will draw more customers to the pub

Brewer and pub operator Joseph Holt has issued an open invitation to the Liam and Noel Gallagher of Oasis after having a mural painted on the side of its Coach & Horses pub in Whitefield, Manchester.

The brothers, who have reformed their band Oasis, will play five nights at nearby Heaton Park in July 2025.

The announcement of the reunion of the previously warring brothers has led to speculation as much as £15m could be made from the concerts by the sector.

Joseph Holt said the pub has become a magnet for fans of the group, which recorded rock classics such as Wonderwall and Live Forever, after licensee Sue Hawley commissioned a monochrome mural of the siblings on the front of the building.

Beers on the house

The artwork has quickly become popular with locals and people from farther afield as many pose in front of it for pictures.

Hawley said the Gallaghers and their bandmates are welcome to come and enjoy Joseph Holt beer or lager on the house when they come to the north-west for the concerts.

The photographically accurate artwork was produced by talented artist Scott Wilcock on the day Oasis made their bombshell announcement about a reunion.

Wilcock, who runs company Sno Graffiti, originally painted a mural featuring famous Manchester footballers at the Coach & Horses. When he came to give the artwork a bit of a touch-up, Oasis had just announced their tour dates for the park, down the road.

Nine hours’ work

Licensee Hawley said: “I immediately said to my husband Lee, we must do something to mark this. So I asked Scott to paint the Gallagher brothers. After nine hours, he had produced this incredible mural. We have since had people from around the world visiting it and posing in front of it with floppy hats and green coats – which we know Liam loves to wear.”

Hawley has worked at Joseph Holt for 30 years – with the past six years spent running the Coach & Horses. However, the Oasis mural, she says, is the greatest stir she has known in her time spent working for the brewery.

Joseph Holt marketing manager Paul Longmire added: “Sue’s decision to celebrate Oasis this way was a brilliant move. We’re sure, as fans flood to the area, not only for the concerts but in the months leading up to the event, they’ll come and visit this magnificent mural. And who knows, they might even bump into Liam and Noel at the bar.”

The brewery, which owns the Coach & Horses has been making beer from its Manchester premises for 175 years and runs 127 pubs across the north-west.
