A West Sussex pub has taken part in the Macmillan Darts Marathon.

The King’s Head in Billingshurst, which is owned by Colin and Oonagh Ganley who ensured the team were fed throughout the 12-hour event, had raised more than £1,400 at the time of publication - exceeding the original target of £500.

The marathon, which raises money for men living with cancer, started at 11am on Monday 24 February, coming to a close at 11pm with more than 100,000 points scored.

Regular updates were posted on the pub’s Facebook page alongside a live stream of the event.

Pub manager Paul Sweeney was part of the team alongside customers Jay Labram and Daniel Lake, who’s idea it was to participate in the marathon as well as Adam Tingley.

Local support

Sweeney told The Morning Advertiser: “Macmillan promotes the marathon and it’s a charity close to our hearts. Cancer affects everyone.”

It seemed like an obvious way to raise money for a good cause, he said.

However, throughout the day, the hours took their toll on the team.

Sweeney added: “There have been a few aches and pains - especially in the legs!

“But it has been good. Lots of people have been coming in and supporting us.

“Every hour has been sponsored by a local business, which shows the support we have.”

Operator advice

Despite this, the team were keen to replay the event in the future and encouraged other operators to do the same.

Sweeney said: “We would do it again. I’d advise anyone else wanting to run a Darts Marathon to do it and make sure you get the locals involved.”

According to Macmillan, some 5,962 fundraisers have been involved in its Darts Marathon overall alongside 1,192 teams raising almost £480,000 in total.

The event aims to get men talking about cancer one throw at a time.
