Woodforde’s relaunches a spring favourite to pubs

MA The Cask Project

Woodforde’s has relaunched its limited-edition Mardler’s ale in time for spring.

The Norfolk brewer’s tipple was crowned Champion Mild Ale of Britain in 1993-94 and will undoubtedly be a welcome return for many.

Woodforde’s said the 3.2% ABV dark mild ale is “steeped in Norfolk heritage, rich in flavour and crafted to spark great conversation”.

It described the beer as being brewed with a “complex blend” of chocolate malt, oats, wheat and a “delicate touch” of British hops.

“It pours deep and inviting,” Woodforde’s said, “with a lusciously chocolatey character, laced with salted caramel flavours and aromas, finishing malty, creamy and satisfyingly smooth.”

Mardler’s is the first in the brewer’s Heritage Series, which will reintroduce classic favourites from its brewing archives.

Time for some gossip

Woodforde’s Brewery marketing manager Chris Fuller said: “In Norfolk folklore, a ‘Mardler’ is someone who loves to gossip – and with its smooth, sessionable charm, Mardler’s has long been known to enhance the quality of conversation.

“Whether you’re catching up with friends or making new ones, this is the beer that keeps the stories flowing.”

The brewer warned, as with all of its seasonal offerings, there is a limited quantity and it will only be available during April.

Last month (March), Woodforde’s relaunched another popular beer in the form of Great Eastern 4.3% ABV Pale Ale.

Thrilled to have it back

The cask classic pays homage to the Great Eastern Railway – an integral part of Norfolk’s rich industrial and transport history.

Head of on-trade sales James Ramm said at the time: “Having been a fan favourite in the past, Great Eastern is making its well-deserved comeback as one of our first seasonal cask releases of 2025.

“We’ve listened to your calls for its return and we’re thrilled to have it back at pubs and venues across Norfolk.”

The brewer launched its first low & no beer in December last year called Volt 0.5%, which it said retains the same taste as its award-winning original 4.5% ABV version.
