An estimated 4m Brits admit to taking tableware from pubs, bars and restaurant every week, according to a study by Nisbets as cited by business insurance company Bionic.
Bionic added this number is part of an estimated 2.1m alcohol-related tehfts each year.
The report – which has warned licensees to prepare for a potential spike in thefts this weekend – cited a story from The Morning Advertiser that stated glasses are the most commonly stolen item, with 36% of people owning up to pocketing at least one.
Respect the space
At least two pubs are using TikTok to highlight the thefts. These being the Grosvenor, Edinburgh, and the Marquis Arms, Swansea.
Publicans should remind customers stealing a glass could leave them barred or facing a fine and licensed premises have the right to refuse service.
Laura Court-Jones, a member of Bionic’s insurance team, added: “Whether you’re heading to your local for a quiet drink or dancing into the early hours, remember that what might feel like a cheeky souvenir comes at a real cost to your favourite venues.
“Respect the space, drink responsibly, and leave the glasses behind this bank holiday.”
Provide evidence
Her advice to combat thefts is:
1. Install CCTV and employ security
Installing CCTV cameras in key areas helps deter reckless behaviour, provides evidence for disputes. Many venues are now equipping security personnel with body cameras to document incidents, prevent false claims, and de-escalate situations before they get out of hand.
2. Set clear policies and train staff
Clear house rules help prevent risky behaviour. Signage like ‘Management reserves the right to refuse service’ sets expectations for customers.
Training staff to spot potential risks early ensures they can step in confidently when needed. A ‘see something, say something’ culture encourages employees to report issues before they escalate, helping maintain a safer environment.
3. Get business insurance
Having the right insurance coverage is essential for helping to protect businesses from financial losses caused by alcohol-related incidents. Contents insurance can play a crucial role in covering stolen or damaged items.
