Independent Yorkshire-based brewery T&R Theakston has announced the on-trade launch of Peculier IPA in a bid to attract “new drinkers to cask”.

The IPA was created by head brewer Mark Slater around two years ago and originally launched in the off-trade in 2023, achieving listings in Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Co-Op and Booths.

Made with 100% British ingredients, Peculier IPA is brewed using British malted barley and three new world, English grown hops, Harlequin, Jester and Olicana.

The brew boasts a zesty, fruity flavour with a full-bodied malty undertone, finished with a pronounced hop-forward flourish.

Modern design

Theakston’s managing director Richard Bradbury told The Morning Advertiser (The MA): “Peculier IPA is a modern take on a traditional British style IPA.

“The serve is through a traditional handpull but the design of the metal golden hop pump-clip gives the beer great standout, putting the hop front and centre with a modern design, which will attract new drinkers to cask.

“This full-bodied beer champions British ingredients. The use of Jester, Harlequin and Olicana, bring new world flavour characteristics with an initial stone fruit flavour developing into a long dry finish.”

The 5.1% ABV beer was also awarded Best Strong Pale Ale/Bitter at the Great Exhibition of Prize Ales 2024.

To support licensees stocking Peculier IPA the brewery has introduced new glassware for the serve and social media assistance for permanent stockists.

Legendary status

Bradbury continued: “In our 200-year history, the Peculier brand has remained prized and protected so it was no mean feat to create a beer worthy of this name.

“We truly believe this IPA has earned its right to be deemed Peculier and is testament to the skill of our expert brewing team.

“While bringing something new to our range, we were also keen to capture the heritage of the IPA in a way that puts UK homegrown ingredients in the spotlight.

“The result is a pint of outstanding smoothness, flavour and character which is establishing a legendary status of its own and we can’t wait to see it enjoyed in its ideal setting, the great British pub.”

Peculier IPA is available for the on-trade now direct from Theakston in both cask and 500ml bottles. In cask it is available in both 9 gallon firkins and 4.5 gallon pins.
