‘A true icon from the heart of grassroots music’: Tributes paid to Ozzy Osbourne

Tributes have been paid to Ozzy Osbourne, who died aged 76.

The heavy metal star’s death was announced on Tuesday (22 July), just weeks after performing with Black Sabbath in the group’s farewell concert.

A statement from his family read: “It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning.

“He was with his family and surrounded by love.”

Powerful reminder

The Night-Time Industries Association (NTIA) described him as a “true icon”.

NTIA CEO Michael Kill said: “We are deeply saddened by the devastating news of Ozzy Osbourne’s passing.

“A true icon, Ozzy was born from the heart of the UK’s grassroots music scene, his journey began at the Crown pub in Birmingham - a modest venue that helped shape one of rock’s greatest legends.

“His story is a powerful reminder of the vital role grassroots venues play in nurturing talent and shaping culture.

“Ozzy wasn’t manufactured, he was forged in the community, passion and grit of local live music spaces.

“From humble beginnings to global stardom, he inspired generations and transformed the sound of rock forever.”

Importance of grassroots music venues

Kill added: “As we mourn his loss, we must also reflect on the importance of protecting grassroots music venues across the UK.

“These are not just places for performance, they are cultural incubators that give birth to icons.

“Ozzy’s legacy lives on through them.”

The Crown, on the corner of Station Street and Hill Street in Birmingham played host to Black Sabbath’s first gig.

Various pubs paid tribute to the heavy metal legend on social media including the Windsor Castle in Gosport, Hampshire.

Lancaster live music venue the Pub also shared their reaction.

Music venue and pub in Dudley Ye Olde Foundry outlined plans raise a glass to Osbourne.

Central BID Birmingham said it was deeply saddened by the passing of the Black Sabbath frontman.
