A country pub has had to close temporarily after a fire, which started in a tumble dryer.

Fire crews were called to the Fox & Hounds Inn, Bredon, Gloucestershire in the early hours of Saturday (25 October) morning.

The village pub shared confirmed the closure on social media, thanking the fire service for their quick response.

The post added: “Please remember to regularly test your fire alarm, this is what saved us from total devastation.”

Emergency service statement

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the fire involved a tumble dryer in a downstairs annexe and there were no casualties.

A spokesperson for emergency service said: “Two Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service crews – one each from Upton-upon-Severn and Pershore Fire Stations – plus the incident command unit from Malvern, supported by Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service crews from Gloucester North and Cheltenham West, were called at 02.20am on 25 October to a thatched building fire in Church Street, Bredon.

“The fire involved a tumble dryer in a downstairs annexe. The fire was fought by four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and boarding up was carried out by fire service personnel.

“Gas and electrics were isolated. There were no casualties and no other emergency services were required. A reinspection took place at 9am and the incident was closed at 12.05pm.”

February last year saw a fire that was started by a faulty tumble dryer destroy a Hall & Woodhouse pub in Hampshire.

The blaze at the Osborne View in Hill Head required about 50 firefighters to tackle the fire at its height.

Dryer fires

Permission was granted to demolish the remains of the site and for it to be rebuilt in March this year, according to the BBC.

In June 2022, village pub the Tap & Run, owned by cricketers Stuart Broad and Harry Gurney, was ravaged by a fire after laundry ignited in a tumble dryer.

The pub reopened in October 2023 and hosted a ‘thank you’ lunch for the firefighters who doused the blaze.

Some 28 firefighters from West Bridgford Fire Station who served on the night on the blaze were thanked personally by the team and enjoyed an exclusive meal.

The site reopened after a £1.2m investment, which was spent on restoring and renovating the pub following the fire.
