PubAid has appointed Kate Nicholls OBE as its new president, marking what the organisation called “an exciting new chapter” as it builds on 15 years of promoting the positive impact of pubs across the UK.

Nicholls, who serves as chair of UKHospitality and previously led the organisation as chief executive, succeeds Keith Bott MBE, who steps down after six years in the role.

Her appointment comes as PubAid strengthens its position as the sector’s “positive voice,” highlighting how pubs enrich lives, foster community connections and support grassroots sport.

‘Heart of communities’

Nicholls said: “Pubs sit at the heart of every community - driving local economies, supporting communities, funding grassroots sport, fundraising and bringing people together in ways that few other places can.

I’m honoured to take on the role of President at PubAid, whose work in highlighting and celebrating these positive stories has never been more important. I look forward to building on the fantastic foundation to ensure that the true value of the great British pub is recognised by government, media and the public alike.”

Nicholls’ will focus on raising awareness of PubAid’s work and amplifying stories that demonstrate pubs’ social, sporting and charitable impact.

Drawing on her policy expertise and industry insight, Nicholls will help steer the group’s long-term strategy to keep pubs’ contribution at the forefront of public and political debate.

PubAid’s initiatives include the Community Pub Hero Awards, run with the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group, and its Positive PUBlicity Hub, which showcases case studies and research on the role pubs play in local life.

On 18 November, Nicholls will present new PubAid research in Parliament exploring how pubs support community sport — findings that align with government priorities on health, wellbeing and social cohesion.

‘A step forward’

PubAid co-founder Des O’Flanagan added: “Kate’s appointment is a brilliant step forward for PubAid. Her influence, knowledge and passion for our sector will help us reach new audiences and continue to showcase the incredible role pubs play across the UK. I’d also like to thank Keith Bott for his fantastic contribution as President over the past six years.”

Founded in 2009, PubAid is backed by leading pub companies, brewers and suppliers to champion the social, cultural and charitable value of pubs nationwide.
