Camerons Brewery: cask should cost more

Hartlepool-based Camerons Brewery has argued cask beer should be sold at higher cost as it prepares to open its first Head of Steam pub in Manchester.

The new pub will open at 3pm on Friday 28 November in a Grade II-listed building on the edge of the Northern Quarter and is set to give away 1,995 pints to consumers as a nod to the brand’s establishment in 1995.

The pub will have 30 draught beer lines – 24 keg and six cask – and Camerons told The Morning Advertiser it prides itself on offering a differentiated range of beers.

“With six cask ales on our bar, we have the ability to deliver different flavour profiles, as well as showcasing local breweries, as well as a regular appearance from one of our own Camerons cask ales,” the brewery said.

“Our guests demand an accessible pale at the 4% ABV mark but have also come to expect a range of flavours, styles and ABVs.”

Pure madness

When asked about whether young people are drinking cask and that being due to its lower price bracket, the brewer said: “It’s pure madness that the crafting and care required to produce and serve a quality pint of cask beer has found itself in a market where the price expectations are lower than keg beer.

“There is a growing young demographic interested in drinking cask but it seems more to do with the experience than the price.”

The importance of cask to the UK is clear for Camerons, which said it’s the heritage of the UK and being unique provides differentiation from other countries that means the UK should be “proud to pour and drink the best beers in the world”.

All Head of Steam sites and its Urban Country pubs estate have a cask offering yet stated while it is proud of pouring its own range of cask beers, it believes it is important customers have the opportunity to try an extensive range so a regular rotation of cask ales are available.

Freshness and depth

“The freshness and the depth of flavour achieved from an unfiltered product that can have the added dry hop character in cask. Nothing beats a well-looked-after and poured cask beer,” Camerons said.

The new 2,800sq ft venue will have space for 180 guests with a central island bar and restored industrial features.

Drinkers can expect to see Belgian favourites such as Delirium, Brugse Zot and La Chouffe, alongside the Head of Steam’s own British-brewed range and other beers from top breweries around the world.

Cocktails, spirits, wines and food from Salford pop-up kitchen That Burger Place will also be on hand to tempt customers while 14 local jobs will be created too.
