Marston's Grandstand sports format performance in pub group's trading update
Differentiated formats: Grandstand is one of the five formats Marston's announced in 2024 (Marston's)

Marston’s revealed how its pub format roll-out has accelerated alongside its plans to complete more in a recent trading update.

Furthermore, the update showed like-for-like sales were up 4% across the festive period with 5.6% growth across the five key dates.

Like-for-like sales for the 17 weeks to 24 January 2026 remained resilient, the group said, with performance tracking in line with the previous year and continuing to outperform the total market.

Pub formats

October 2024 saw the business reveal five pub formats as part of its aim to be a “pure play hospitality business”.

These include family concept Woodie’s, sports-focused format Grandstand alongside ‘locals pubs’, ‘adult dining’ venues and ‘two-room’ sites.

In the update, Marston’s revealed it had completed 23 new launches in the first quarter of the year with new format sites continuing to outperform, supporting the group’s plans to complete more than 50 in its 2026 financial year.

Elsewhere in the update, the group highlighted how its programme of demand-driven events such as a new initiative including a partnership centred on Roald Dahl character Matilda alongside the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the summer provide further confidence in the 2026 financial year delivery.

Strong start

It added the board was confident in delivering full-year consensus expectations and the group was firmly on track to deliver against targets set at the October 2024 Capital Markets Day, including shareholder returns.

Marston’s CEO Justin Platt said: “Our pubs have delivered another strong start to the year, with standout performance across our key festive trading dates including setting a new record for Christmas Day - a clear reflection of the strength of our community pubs and the passion and energy our teams bring to every service.

“Like-for-like sales have remained resilient and with 23 new pub format launches completed already in the first quarter, our accelerated roll-out programme is driving further trading momentum and enhancing guest experience.

“Supported by a clear strategy, disciplined cost control and a strong programme of demand-driving events, we are excited for the opportunities ahead and remain confident in delivering market expectations for the full year.”
