A Warwickshire gastropub is set to shut its doors following ongoing escalating costs.

The Mount by Glynn Purnell in Henley-in-Arden first opened in March 2022 and has had four successful years, serving its local community, a statement said.

However, it is now not sustainable to continue to venture, chef, restaurateur and TV personality Purnell said.

A post shared the pub’s social media said: “The Mount by Glynn Purnell is Henley-in-Arden will close its doors following its final service on Sunday 15 March 2026.

“The pub first opened on 30 March 2022 and has enjoyed four successful years serving the local community.

“The owners have taken the difficult decision to close the business. Rising running costs, increasing food prices and energy bills have made the pub no longer financially viable.

“Customers who hold vouchers are asked to contact the pub directly to arrange a booking and redeem them before the final service on 15 March.

“The owners have confirmed that staff are being supported through the closure and all suppliers will be paid.”

Tough decision

The pub’s website also has a notice that urged customers to redeem any vouchers in the next month as after Sunday 15 March, the pub will permanently close.

Furthermore, Purnell also said: “After four wonderful years, the very tough decision has been made to close the Mount.

“I’ve genuinely loved my time at the pub - it’s been a special place with a brilliant team and fantastic guests who have supported us from day one.

“The hospitality landscape has become increasingly challenging and despite everyone’s hard work, it’s simply not sustainable to continue.

“I’m hugely grateful for the opportunity and for the commitment shown throughout. I wish the owners every success for the future.

“I’ll now be focusing my time on my other ventures - Trillium and Plates by Purnell’s in Birmingham, and the Wood Norton in Evesham and I look forward to welcoming guests there.”

The pub’s owners reiterated Purnell’s comments about the difficult decision to shut the site.

No longer viable

They added: “We are so proud of what the Mount has achieved since opening in March 2022 and of the team who have worked tirelessly to make it such a welcoming and well-regarded pub.

“However, with the continued rise in operating costs - from food and drink to energy and general overheads - it has become clear the business is no longer viable.

“We want to thank our staff for their dedication and professionalism, our suppliers for their support and most importantly, our loyal customers who have supported the Mount over the past four years.

“We are committed to ensuring our team are looked after and that all suppliers are paid and we hope to see many of our guests before we close our doors on 15 March.”

Data from Ryan at the beginning of the year found an average of one pub a day closed permanently across England and Wales during 2025.

The figures highlighted the continued contraction of the pub estate with almost 2,000 pubs disappearing over the past five years, despite a modest slowing in the rate of decline.

Ryan practice leader for Europe and Asia Pacific property tax Alex Probyn said the figures reflected permanent losses rather than short-term trading suspensions.

He added: “These pubs have closed permanently, not temporarily. The buildings have been demolished or converted into housing offices, nurseries, cafés or other uses.

“Once repurposed, they almost never return to pub use.”

The largest declines were seen in the East Midlands, north west and Yorkshire and the Humber.
