Vikki and Gavin King, who have run two pubs side by side for the past 13 years, will retain Tuddenham Lodge Griddle & Grill but relinquish the Fox at Lyng when its lease ends later this year.
Speaking to The Morning Advertiser (MA) Vikki said the move was not financially driven, stressing that both businesses are “successful and profitable”.
“If this were purely a financial decision, we would simply carry on,” she said. “We have built two strong, sustainable business models, and that is something we will always be proud of.”
Quality of life
Instead, she described the decision as being centred on quality of life and health.
“Running two pubs has meant Gavin and I often work separately, spinning plates in different places,” she said. “At some point you have to stop and ask yourself: you can keep making money, but if that money doesn’t give you the time or space to enjoy your life, what are you really working for?”
The pair rebuilt both businesses from previously closed premises and remain hands-on in day-to-day operations. Vikki said bringing in managers would have “significantly reduced what profit is left at the end of the year” while retaining the same level of responsibility.
The Fox at Lyng will continue trading as normal while the lease is marketed, with all weddings, events and bookings proceeding as planned.
“We are not closing our doors, and we are continuing to host all weddings, events and stays exactly as planned,” she said. “We remain committed to giving the same warm welcome, amazing food and memorable experiences.”
Sustainable future
Looking ahead, the couple plan to take on more sustainable roles within Tuddenham Lodge, with Gavin working two to three days a week in the kitchen and Vikki overseeing operations while developing a new pre-loved country clothing venture.
“It felt like the right moment - a natural pause in the road - to refocus, rebalance, and regain some time,” Vikki added.
