Two-Michelin-starred chef Andrew Wong is teaming up with Dishoom co-founder Amar Radia to launch a Chinese pub in Shoreditch later this year.

Kong will be the anchor tenant at British Land’s Norton Folgate development, which is also home to Osteria Angelina and Kolamba East.

The duo are taking on a former pub within the development that first opened its doors in 1792, around the same time the first Chinese settlers arrived in east London.

Its trading names have included the Pewter Platter, The Poet and the Water Poet.

The venue will bring together two histories under one roof: the grand east London pub and the Chinese kitchen, offering “dumplings at dawn, noodles at lunch, grills with a cold pint at dusk”.

The site occupies just under 6,000 sq ft, with an 800 sq ft courtyard, and has been secured on a new 20-year lease with British Land. The design and interiors will be overseen by Afroditi Krassa.

Savills acted on behalf of the landlord, British Land, while Davis Coffer Lyons advised the Kong team.

“Kong is a Chinese kitchen reflecting our personality, shaped by London, the East End, China and A. Wong. Untraditional, instinctive, fearless, all-day cooking,” said Wong.

Radia, co-founder of Kong, added: “The grand east London pub and the Chinese kitchen have been part of London for more than 200 years. Kong honours that history while writing the next chapter – a Chinese public house with a warm, wide welcome.”

Wong is best known for his progressive Pimlico restaurant, A. Wong, which made history in 2021 as the first Chinese restaurant outside Asia to win two Michelin stars.

Further details about Kong will be announced in due course.
