Estate moves: Greene King reviews pubs for potential sale (Greene King)

Greene King has confirmed it is reviewing around 65 pubs for potential sale as part of its wider estate strategy.

The pub operator and brewer said sites identified for possible disposal could be sold individually or in groups, depending on the route to market.

A Greene King spokesperson said: “As part of our pub estate strategy announced earlier this year, we identified a number of pubs for potential sale in the medium term.

“As a result, we are reviewing each pub to determine the most appropriate route to market, which may involve an open sales process or a targeted off market approach. In either case, prospective purchasers may seek to acquire individual or multiple sites.”

Estate strategy

Earlier this year, Greene King announced plans to convert or sell around 300 managed pubs as part of a new estate strategy.

The pubco said at the time the move was intended to set the business up for sustainable and profitable growth.

Roughly half of the 300 pubs are expected to be converted to leased and tenanted or franchise venues within Greene King’s Pub Partners estate.

The remaining sites are being evaluated for potential sale over the medium term.

Greene King said some pubs with a similar operational focus had been presented collectively to prospective purchasers, although sites could still be acquired individually or in groups.

The company said it was unable to share further details on the sale process at this stage.

Wider shake up

The Morning Advertiser (MA) previously reported the estate review formed part of a wider restructuring at Greene King, which also included head office changes, investment in digital and loyalty, and a sharper focus on its core managed estate.

Greene King runs around 2,500 sites across the UK.

The business previously said funds raised from disposals would be reinvested into its core estate, while its Pub Partners division has continued to grow through leased, tenanted and franchise models.
