Prince William paid a surprise visit to the Prince of Peckham yesterday (3 June), praising the role pubs play in supporting local communities and tackling loneliness.

The Prince of Wales stopped by the south London venue during a visit to Peckham focused on community initiatives and social impact projects across the area.

Chatty Patty initiative

During the visit, Prince William met staff, customers and participants involved in the pub’s “Chatty Patty” initiative, which offers free tea, conversation and companionship to local people each week.

The programme was launched to help combat loneliness and create stronger community connections through informal social interaction in the pub environment.

Speaking during the visit, Prince William said: “I love pubs. I want to do as much as I can to support them because I love the community. We need to protect our pubs.”

The prince was also filmed pulling pints behind the bar at the venue, describing his effort as “pretty good”.

Cultural hub

Prince of Peckham was founded by Clement Ogbonnaya in 2017 and has built a reputation as a community-led pub and cultural venue in south London.

The visit comes at a time when operators across the sector continue to emphasise the wider social value of pubs beyond food and drink sales, particularly around community connection, wellbeing and reducing isolation.

The pub shared footage from the visit on social media alongside the message: “Spaces that bring people together.”

Prince William’s visit to Peckham also included a stop at local charity Pecan, which operates Southwark Foodbank and supports households across the borough experiencing poverty and food insecurity.

The visit continues the Prince of Wales’ recent public support for pubs and hospitality venues, having previously described pubs as “crucial” community spaces and said he wanted to do more to support the sector during a visit to the Gothenburg pub in Scotland earlier this year.
